About music theory

Music theory explains how music works: why certain notes sound good together, how keys and chords relate and how songs are built. Theory courses help instrumentalists understand what they play, songwriters and producers write with intent and students prepare for further music study.

Beginner modules cover the staff and clefs, note names, note values, time signatures and rhythm, sharps and flats, and the layout of the keyboard as a reference. You then learn intervals, major and minor scales, key signatures and the circle of fifths, and how triads are built and named.

Intermediate lessons cover diatonic chords and Roman numeral analysis, common chord progressions, seventh chords, cadences, inversions, voice leading and modulation. Advanced courses explore modes, secondary dominants, borrowed chords, extended and altered harmony, counterpoint and analyzing form in classical, jazz and popular music.

Ear training often runs alongside theory: recognizing intervals, chord qualities and progressions by sound. Choose a course that connects theory to your instrument or software, since a producer working in a piano roll and a classical student need different examples.

Choosing a music theory course

  • Look for a course that connects theory to an instrument or software you use, such as piano, guitar or a DAW piano roll.
  • Check whether it teaches reading notation or uses chord symbols and the piano roll instead.
  • Prefer courses with ear training exercises so concepts become sounds you recognize.
  • Make sure each concept comes with exercises and answer keys.
  • If you write songs or produce, choose a course focused on chord progressions and harmony in popular styles.
  • If you are preparing for formal study or exams, check that the course follows a structured, graded syllabus.

Questions about music theory

Do I need to play an instrument to learn music theory?

It helps but is not required. A keyboard or a free virtual piano makes intervals and chords easier to see and hear. Many courses use the piano layout as a visual reference.

What is the circle of fifths?

It is a diagram that arranges keys by their relationship, showing how many sharps or flats each key has and which keys and chords are closely related. Theory courses use it for key signatures, progressions and modulation.

Will theory make my music sound formulaic?

Theory describes common patterns rather than rules you must follow. Understanding it gives you more choices and helps you explain and repeat sounds you already like.

What is Roman numeral analysis?

It labels chords by their position in a key, such as I, IV and V, so you can see the same progression in any key. It is useful for transposing, writing and understanding songs.
