About model kits

Model kits are built by hand, then painted and finished. Plastic injection kits are the most common, made of parts on sprues; resin kits offer fine detail for experienced builders; and wooden ship models and photo-etched brass add craftsmanship. Kits are described by scale, which is the ratio of model size to the real object, and by skill level.

Model railways use their own scales and gauges, with locomotives, rolling stock, track and scenery. Miniatures and figure kits are used in tabletop games and display. Aftermarket parts like decals, photo-etch and detail sets help modelers improve kits.

Check the scale, skill level and what's included — some kits need glue, paint and tools bought separately. Many kits contain small parts and are intended for teens and adults.

Choosing a model kit

  • Choose a scale that matches your existing collection or display space.
  • Check the skill level and whether glue, paint and tools are included.
  • For model trains, confirm scale and gauge match your layout.
  • For used or opened kits, ask whether all parts, decals and instructions are present.
  • Ask about decal condition on older kits, since they can deteriorate.

Questions about model kits

What does scale mean on a model kit?

Scale is the ratio of the model to the real object. A smaller second number means a larger, more detailed model.

What do I need to build my first kit?

Usually plastic cement, a hobby knife, sprue cutters, sanding sticks and paints, unless the kit is snap-fit or pre-colored.

Can I buy opened or partly built kits?

Yes, often at lower prices. Ask the seller which parts are missing and how far assembly has progressed.
