About live music

Live music events are the everyday side of performance: a band playing a local bar, a singer-songwriter in a cafe, a jazz trio's weekly residency, a DJ night, a folk session or an open mic where anyone can sign up. They are usually shorter and more informal than a full concert, and part of the fun is discovering artists you have not heard before.

Most live music events happen in person, with capacity set by the venue. Some artists also play informal sets online for fans who cannot make it, using their own streaming tool and sharing the link with registered attendees.

When choosing a gig, look at the genre, the lineup, the venue and the start time. Check age rules and accessibility for the venue, and remember that set times at small venues can shift, so arrive a little early.

Finding a gig worth going to

  • Check the genre and listen to the artists on the bill before you register.
  • Look up the venue for location, accessibility and any age restrictions.
  • Note door time versus set time, if the listing gives both.
  • If a gig is full, join the waitlist; small venues often see last-minute changes.
  • Support artists you enjoy by following their shop for music and merch.

Questions about live music

What is the difference between live music and an online concert?

Here, live music means gigs and sets, mostly in person at local venues and often informal. Online concerts are full, planned shows streamed to an audience at home.

What do I need to bring to a gig?

Usually just your registration confirmation and whatever the venue requires, such as ID for age-restricted rooms. Check the listing or message the organizer.

Can I sign up to play at an open mic?

Ask the organizer. Some open mics take performer sign-ups through the event, others in person on the night.
