An interview skills course prepares you for the conversation that comes after your application. Typical modules cover researching the employer and role, building a short set of stories from your experience, answering common questions such as tell me about yourself and why this role, handling behavioral and situational questions, and closing the interview with thoughtful questions of your own.
Behavioral questions get special attention because they ask for real examples. Many courses teach a structure such as STAR (situation, task, action, result) to keep answers focused, and have you practice out loud or record yourself. You will usually also learn how to talk about weaknesses, gaps, failures and reasons for leaving honestly and without rambling.
Formats vary, and good courses cover several: phone screens, one-way recorded video interviews, live video calls, panel interviews, case or problem-solving interviews, presentations and technical interviews. For video formats, expect lessons on camera framing, lighting, sound and eye contact. Field-specific courses go deeper on case interviews, coding interviews or teaching demonstrations.
Later modules often cover thank-you notes, following up and talking about compensation in general terms. A course can make you calmer and better prepared; whether you receive an offer still depends on the role, the other candidates and the employer.
Choosing an interview skills course
- Match the course to the interview you expect, whether that is a phone screen, a panel, a case interview or a technical round.
- Look for lessons that make you practice answers aloud or on camera rather than only reading sample answers.
- Check that the course helps you build answers from your own experience instead of memorizing scripts.
- Choose an instructor who has sat on the hiring side, such as a recruiter or hiring manager, if you want an insider's view.
- For field-specific interviews, confirm the course covers that field's format, for example case questions or whiteboard problems.

Questions about interview skills
What is the STAR method?
It is a way to structure answers to behavioral questions: describe the situation, your task, the actions you took and the result. Interview courses use it to keep answers specific and concise, and usually have you prepare several STAR stories in advance.
How soon before an interview should I take a course?
Ideally a week or more, so you have time to prepare stories and practice. If your interview is in a day or two, focus on the modules about common questions, researching the employer and your closing questions.
Do these courses cover video interviews?
Most current courses do, including recorded one-way interviews and live video calls, with practical advice on setup, framing, sound and keeping natural eye contact.
Will a course make sure I pass the interview?
No course can promise that. It helps you prepare and present yourself clearly, but the decision rests with the employer and depends on many factors you cannot control.
