About guest lectures

A guest lecture brings in someone from outside to share their work: an author discussing a new book, a researcher presenting findings, a practitioner reflecting on a career, or an artist talking about their process. Guest lectures are often the highlight of a society's calendar or a course program, and many are open to the public.

The format is usually a talk followed by questions from the audience, sometimes with a host in conversation with the guest. In-person guest lectures may include time to meet the speaker afterward; online ones let audiences attend from anywhere, with the meeting link sent to registered attendees.

Because guest lectures are often one-time events, popular ones can fill up. Register early, check the time zone if you're attending online, and look at whether the organizer plans to share a replay.

Choosing a guest lecture

  • Read about the guest's work beforehand so you can follow and ask better questions.
  • Check whether the lecture is open to the public or aimed at a specific group.
  • Register early for well-known speakers, since capacity may be limited.
  • Note whether the format is a talk, a conversation or both.
  • Ask whether a replay will be shared if you can't attend live.
