About doors & windows

Doors and windows include interior panel, flush and glazed doors, exterior front and back doors, French and sliding patio doors, barn doors with track hardware, pre-hung units with frames, and windows such as casement, sash, sliding and fixed units, plus skylights, frames, sills, glazing and weatherstripping.

Measurements and specifications are critical. Doors are measured by height, width and thickness, and you need to know whether you need a slab or pre-hung unit and which way it opens. Windows need rough opening sizes. Exterior products should suit your climate, with appropriate insulation, glazing and weather sealing, and may need to meet energy and safety codes.

Reclaimed doors and period windows from salvage dealers add character to renovations, but often need trimming, repair or new glazing. Installation of exterior doors and windows may require permits; check local rules.

Choosing doors and windows

  • Measure height, width and thickness, and decide between a door slab and a pre-hung unit.
  • Note the swing direction and handing before ordering.
  • For windows, measure the rough opening and check glazing and frame material.
  • Exterior doors and windows may need to meet energy, safety glass and building codes; check local rules.
  • For reclaimed doors, ask about warping, paint layers, hardware holes and trimming allowance.
  • Ask about delivery for heavy or oversized items and whether local pickup is available.

Questions about doors & windows

What is the difference between a slab and a pre-hung door?

A slab is just the door. A pre-hung door comes already mounted in a frame with hinges, which can make installation easier.

Can a reclaimed door be trimmed to fit?

Often a little, depending on the construction. Ask the seller how much can be trimmed and check with your carpenter.

Do I need a permit to replace windows?

In some places, yes, especially for exterior changes or in historic areas. Check local rules.
