About coins

Coin collecting, or numismatics, includes many specialties: coins from one country or era, ancient Greek and Roman coins, commemorative and proof issues, error coins, mint sets, and tokens and medals. Collectors often build sets by date and mint mark, by design type or by theme.

Condition is central. Coins are described with grading terms that range from heavily worn to uncirculated, and some are certified and sealed in holders by independent grading services. Factors include wear on high points, luster, strike quality, toning, scratches and signs of cleaning, which collectors usually avoid.

Counterfeits exist in many popular series, so buy from sellers who show sharp photos of both sides and the edge, state weight and diameter, and explain how they verify authenticity. For valuable coins, independent grading or authentication is a sensible step.

Buying collectible coins

  • Look for clear photos of the obverse, reverse and edge, under even light.
  • Compare the listed weight, diameter and composition with reference specifications for that coin.
  • Understand the grade given and whether it is the seller's opinion or from an independent grading service.
  • Avoid coins described as cleaned unless you are happy with that, as cleaning usually reduces collector interest.
  • Ask about packaging and insured shipping for higher-value coins.

Questions about coins

What does a graded coin mean?

A graded coin has been assessed for condition, either by the seller or by an independent grading service that seals it in a labeled holder. Ask which applies.

How can I avoid counterfeit coins?

Buy from sellers who show detailed photos and specifications, compare with reference data, and use independent authentication for valuable coins.

Should I clean old coins?

Collectors generally advise against it, because cleaning can remove original surfaces and reduce interest. Store coins in inert holders instead.
