About child development

Child development courses explain how children grow and change, and what adults can do to support that growth day to day. Typical modules cover the broad stages from infancy through the early school years and beyond, physical and motor development, thinking and problem solving, language and communication, and social-emotional development such as attachment, self-regulation, empathy and friendships.

Play is a central theme in most courses: why children play, how different kinds of play build different skills, and how to join in without taking over. Language modules look at talking, reading and responding to children in ways that build vocabulary and conversation. Social-emotional modules cover temperament, big feelings, separation and helping children name and manage emotions. Some courses also introduce widely taught theories of development in plain language.

These courses are educational and describe general patterns, not rules every child must follow, since children develop in their own ways and at their own pace. They are not medical advice, developmental assessment or diagnosis, and they do not replace family therapy or counseling. If you have any concern about a child's health, development, behavior or safety, speak with a pediatrician or another qualified professional.

Choosing a child development course

  • Look for courses that cover the stage you care about most, whether infancy, the toddler years or the early school years.
  • Prefer instructors who explain ideas with everyday examples of play, conversation and routine rather than only theory.
  • Check that the course treats development as a range of normal variation and avoids alarming checklists.
  • See whether the course includes activity ideas you can try with a child at home or in a care setting.
  • Take any worry about a child's development to a pediatrician or qualified professional; a course cannot assess an individual child.

Questions about child development

Can a child development course tell me if my child is on track?

No. Courses explain general patterns and how to support learning, but they cannot assess an individual child. If you have questions about your child's development, a pediatrician or qualified professional can help.

Is a child development course useful if I am not a parent?

Yes. Grandparents, nannies, foster carers, aunts and uncles, and people considering work with children often take these courses to understand how children learn and grow.

Do these courses cover emotions and behavior?

Many include social-emotional development, such as attachment, self-regulation and empathy. They offer general understanding, not behavioral diagnosis, and persistent concerns should go to a qualified professional.

Is my progress saved between lessons?

Yes. Your progress through each module and lesson is saved, so you can continue where you left off.
