About camping tents

Tents are grouped by season rating and use. Three-season tents handle spring through fall, with mesh for ventilation and a fly for rain. Four-season and mountain tents use stronger poles and fabrics and lower profiles to shed wind and snow. Family and car-camping tents prioritize headroom, multiple rooms and big doors over weight. Ultralight shelters and tarps, often made by cottage manufacturers, use trekking poles instead of dedicated poles to save weight.

Construction details tell you a lot. Freestanding tents stand without stakes, which helps on rock or platforms; semi-freestanding and non-freestanding designs save weight but need good staking. Double-wall tents separate the inner and fly to reduce condensation; single-wall tents are lighter but can get damp inside. Look at the fly's waterproof rating, floor fabric, pole material and the number of doors and vestibules.

Capacity ratings assume people lying shoulder to shoulder, so many campers size up by one person for gear and comfort.

Choosing a camping tent

  • Pick a season rating for your conditions: three-season for most trips, four-season for snow and high wind.
  • Size up one person if you want room for gear or a dog.
  • Compare packaged weight, packed size, floor area and peak height.
  • Check the fly and floor waterproof ratings and whether seams are taped or need sealing.
  • For used tents, ask about pole damage, zipper function, delamination and any odor from storage.
  • Confirm what's included — stakes, guylines, footprint and repair kit.

Questions about camping tents

What size tent do I need?

Tent capacity assumes sleepers side by side with little room left over. If you want space for packs or extra comfort, choose one size larger than the number of people.

Do I need a footprint?

A footprint protects the floor from abrasion and can extend a tent's life, especially on rough ground. Some ultralight campers skip it to save weight.

How do I check a used tent?

Ask the seller to pitch it and send photos, check for bent or cracked poles, peeling waterproof coating, failing zippers and holes in mesh.
